Midnight - Sab, this is 4 u

Everything’s quiet at midnight.

The sky is dark, the streets are quiet. It’s as if someone has pressed the mute button and silenced the world for a mere few hours. At midnight the creatures of the night come out to play, hidden beneath the safety of darkness. They slink out into the open, waiting.

Secrets.

Secrets emerge from the darkest depths of the human soul and show themselves as bright as day underneath the stars and the moon and the dark sky.

Midnight is the time for teenagers to sneak in and sneak out. They tiptoe to their windows, hearts racing, pulse humming. They listen to the sounds of suspicious parents. Their hands shake with adrenaline, urging themselves to move forward. And when they’re certain of themselves, when they’ve gathered enough courage, they slip out into the darkness, becoming a creature consumed by night.

This is where our story begins. A teenage boy and a teenage girl, in love beyond belief but denied by their parents. They walk alone in the empty streets clutching each other closer than ever before. Their footsteps echo off the pavement and become louder and louder as the couple races off leaving the quiet houses and the quiet streets behind them.

The light of the moon shines on their faces and makes the mischievous gleam in his eyes glitter brighter than a million diamonds put together. His mysterious smirk tells of all the unholy things running through his mind.

The two slows their pace as soon as the masses of neighborhood houses fades behind them.

Catching her breath, she leans against the hood of a parked car and gives him her full attention. “What do we do now?”

“Whatever we want. Right now we’re free - free to do whatever the fuck we want.” His hand moves to cup the side of her jaw, skimming her cheek with his thumb. “It’s all about you and me tonight.”

She smiles at him as his lips grazes her ear. A cold gust of wind picks up stray pieces of garbage roaming the the empty streets. Wisps of hair fan out behind her and the red on the tip of her noise amplifies. His hands move down her arms and wrap themselves around hers. His lips tease hers with the softest amount of pressure. Her arms, still against her side, as her eyelids flutter against the tops of his cheeks.

“Please,” she whispers, her mouth itching to attach itself to his. His lips press into hers harder,  She groans and slides those thin little arms up that perfect waist and into the hair that was just as familiar as her own.

Lips connect, breaths mingle.

Always.

“Wait, Louis, w-we need to move bef-“

He shushes her with a hungry kiss, silencing any doubt she had in that complicated mind of hers.

“Didn’t you hear what I said? We can do anything tonight. No one’s in control of us now. There’s no one to tell us to stop.” He watches her with the sparkling brown eyes of his.

He was in love. The kind of love fairy tales were written about. The kind of love people died for.

“I love you so much more than I thought I would,” he murmurs. She doesn’t need to reply because her simple kiss and shining eyes say it all.

“Let’s go to our spot,” she says, dragging him away from the car and pulling him into the shadows. They walk the familiar route intertwining their hands and holding on as tightly as they can. They laugh, shoving each other like little two-year olds. This was how their relationship worked.

When they arrive at their desired destination, he helps her climb onto his shoulders to straddle the metal gate. The material of her pants catches in the wire for a few seconds before she wriggles it free. Once she pushes herself onto the other side she unlocks the gate and lets him step through. They glance behind their shoulders constantly, hoping to God their freedom would last just a minute longer. The secluded section of the park, right behind the bridge, was marked as their territory. The summer before he had carved their initials into as many trees around that spot as he could. It was a place they visited often; usually for more sweet reasons.

She rolls out the blanket she brought with her and lays it on the ground, subtly wet with early dew. He kicks his shoes off and lays down, ignoring her tugs and pulls on the blanket.

“I wasn’t done,” she whines. “The corners are all bent up!”

He rolls his eyes at her. “I’m not getting up.”

She gives up the effort of trying to pull the blanket from beneath his body and settles herself against his chest. They lay there, hearts beating evenly in synchronization as they stare up at the half-moon and starless sky.

“I don’t ever want to leave,” she sighs. “I don’t like being without you…”

He doesn’t let her see the pain in his eyes.

“I know,” he assures her.

A comfortable silence settles over them until he starts to hum her favorite song - Just Give Me A Reason. The melody was quite simple and sweet and left a strange taste in his mouth afterwards. He continued to hum to her, loving the way her eyes probed his face and her hands stroked his cheeks. Her touch was the only thing keeping him sane by this point.

The song finished and his voice faded into the quiet night air.

“One day,” he whispered to her. “One day I’m going to take you far away from here and then I’ll have you all to myself.”
